Employment
Program Assistant
The IMA Program Assistant, a newly established role, will support three early career Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artsworkers to gain experience within the institution.
Each year between 2021 and 2024, one individual will be employed on a part-time contract, during which they will work closely with the IMA team across a broad range of activities, including artistic programs, development, and operations. Throughout their employment the Program Assistant will gain knowledge and experience across all aspects of gallery and institutional management.
This initiative is generously supported by Sullivan+Strumpf, Sydney.
Open Calls and Submissions
Jeremy Hynes Award
Since 2009, the IMA has had the honour of presenting the $10,000 prize to an experimental Queensland artist in the earlier stages of their career, made possible by a bequest made by the family of Jeremy Hynes in his name.
The Jeremy Hynes Award is now open for entries. Entries close 8 August.
The Visual Field
The Visual Field is an art immersion program for grade 11 and 12 students presented with Flying Arts Alliance. Participants visit exhibitions, meet artists and curators, discuss and pick apart artworks, and begin writing a piece about an exhibition or work encountered during the program.
Students then receive support to draft and produce an industry-quality piece of writing. The program culminates in the publication of Art Enquirer, a collection of student’s writings published by the IMA.
Applications for Art Enquirer 2021 are now closed.
the churchie emerging art prize
‘the churchie’ is one of Australia’s leading prizes for emerging artists. Presented at the IMA since 2019, the finalists’ exhibition provides a survey of the compelling and diverse work being produced by emerging artists today.
Entries for the 2021 prize are now closed.
Annual Gala
In 2015, to celebrate its 40th Anniversary, the IMA launched its first black tie Gala and Benefit Auction. Now the event has become a national leader in contemporary art fundraising, and one of Brisbane’s most glamorous winter events. Each year the IMA’s Annual Gala is held in honour of a leading Australian artist, academic, or curator for their role in shaping the Australian contemporary art landscape as well as their connection to the organisation’s past.
Honourees have included Robert MacPherson, Nancy Underhill, Tracey Moffatt, Richard Stringer, Rex Butler, Judy Watson, Richard Bell, Madonna Staunton, Jenny Watson, and Laurie Nilsen.
