In conjunction with our exhibition of work by Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta (1948–85), guest curator Susan Best presents a talk titled Ana Mendieta’s Emotional Ties. It will centre on the Silueta series—Mendieta’s most important work—and consider her ideas about an emotional connection to the earth.

The exhibition Ana Mendieta: Connecting to the Earth brings together two series about connection to land that are rarely considered together. The Silueta and Rupestrian Sculpture series powerfully demonstrate Mendieta’s idea of feminised nature. Connecting to the Earth is Mendieta’s first solo exhibition in Australia and has been guest curated by Professor Susan Best, Deputy Director (Research and Postgraduate), Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
