Stencil Making with Gordon Hookey

Artist Video

2023

Create a stencil in the studio with Gordon Hookey.

This video has been developed to support education and engagement in connection with the A MURRIALITY exhibition, featuring Waanyi artist Gordon Hookey.

Materials:
– Pencil and ruler
– Stanley knife and cutting mat
– Acrylic paint and paintbrushes
– Felt pens or permanent markers
– Heavy duty cardboard (can be primed with gesso or acrylic paint)

Activity Instructions:
– Watch the artist video of Gordon Hookey explaining how to make a stencil.
– Choose a slogan to communicate about a social, political or environmental issue that you care about. This could be something that affects you, your family, your friends or your community. Short and simple messages work best.
– Select a piece of cardboard to fit your message.
– Prepare your stencil by using a ruler to draw the halfway points horizontally and vertically on the cardboard.
– Count the number of letters in your message and use this to measure boxes for your letters to be spaced evenly across the cardboard.
– Draw your letters in block font, one letter per box.
– Add tabs for letters such as O and A so the letters don’t fall out when you cut them.
– Use a Stanley knife with cutting mat underneath to cut out your letters.
– Transfer your message onto a prepared surface by applying paint inside the stencil design and leave to dry.
