The IMA Gallery Shop welcomes Mark Titmarsh for the launch of his new book, Expanded Painting (Bloomsbury), with an introductory talk and Q&A with Reuben Keehan, Curator of Contemporary Asian Art, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art.

The relevance of painting has been questioned many times over the last century, by the arrival of photography, installation art and digital technologies. In Expanded Painting Titmarsh traces the paradoxical relationship between this art form and its opposing forces. It attempts to define a new practice known as ‘expanded painting’, giving the term historical context, theoretical structure, and acknowledging its important place in contemporary art practice.

Expanded Painting argues that, as the formal boundaries tumble, painting expands to become a kind of total art incorporating all other media including sculpture, video and performance.

Biography:
Mark Titmarsh’s current work executed under the rubric of ‘expanded painting’ is painting about painting, or painting that dissimulates into objects, videos, performances and texts. He is currently a lecturer in the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building, University of Technology, Sydney, where he teaches Interdisciplinary Studies.

His paintings and screen work are currently held in public collections across Australia, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Art Gallery of Western Australia, Monash University Museum of Art, National Film and Sound Archive, and in private collections in Europe and the United States.
