John Chantler is a true stalwart of Room40’s fifteen-year history, exemplifying the label’s divergent reach. Born in Bundaberg, he has lived outside of Australia for much of his life, firstly in Japan, then London, and most recently Stockholm. In recent times, Chantler has been focused on developing a deeply personal and evocative language through modular synthesis. His editions The Luminous Ground and Even Clean Hands Damage The Work chart a series of playful yet demanding explorations into electronic sound.

For MONO, he is working with a quadraphonic set up, exploiting control voltage to unexpected ends — equally beautiful and abstract. His Australian performances herald the release of a new set of recordings due later this year. John Chantler’s appearance is made possible with support from Konstnärsnämden — The Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

For MONO22 he is joined by Brisbane’s finest percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson who presents a brand new solo work for gong. Imagine being vibrated straight into transcendence, that’s what Tomlinson will deliver.

Free, all welcome.
