IMA Belltower Façade

Michael Candy‘s IMA Belltower façade projection Fields combines drone footage of local Brisbane antennas with live radio signal recordings taken in the same area, exploring the invisible realm of radio through video. Most radio transmissions are digital, but can still be heard as stereo audio when scanning the airwaves. The sounds range from beeps and boops to harsh static chunks to melodic patterns of data. Candy uses a spectrograph to visualise the recorded audio, cutting it with footage of antennas near to the sample location. The resulting video is subsequently corrupted and glitched by the recorded radio data.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
