Energy Fields: Vibrations of the Pacific

Book Launch

1 February 2025
11am–1pm

Join us for the Brisbane launch of the catalogue for the exhibition Energy Fields: Vibrations of the Pacificcurated by Robert Takahashi Novak and our own Lawrence English, held at the Guggenheim Gallery at Chapman University in California. The show was concerned with how waves of all forms—sound, light, and electro-magnetic—affect the body and perception. It was also premised on the energetic dynamism of the Pacific rim, a region famed for its earthquakes, volcanoes, and nuclear testing. Energy Fields is part of the third Pacific Standard Time, a Southern California–wide initiative by The Getty.

Energy Fields showcased artists from Japan, Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, and the US: Lauren Bon and Metabolic Studio, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Channing Hansen, Virginia Katz, Len Lye, Minoru Sato, Rachel Shearer, Kyle Slabb, Akio Suzuki, Malena Szlam, Alba Triana, David Haines and Joyce Hinterding, Ross Manning, Steve Roden, and Annea Lockwood and Bob Bielecki. The publication features texts by the curators Rana Adhikari, Marcus Herse, Vanessa Kwan, Patrick McCray, Enrique Rivera, Fiona Shen, and others.

Lawrence English will discuss the show, followed by a Ross Manning sound performance.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
