Using bespoke instruments and experimental vocals to push at the nexus of improvisation and composition, Indonesia’s Senyawa (Rully Shabara and Wukir Suryadi) create a unique sound world. Their work is visceral and physical, and incorporates elements of traditional Indonesian music, free jazz, noise, and heavy metal. Over a decade, they have developed a music entirely their own.

Inspired by microbiology, quantum physics, and Zen, Fabio Perletta investigates the delicate balance between presence and space, material and immaterial, silence and noise. He has featured in the Venice Biennale and at such venues as London’s Café Oto.

Senyawa.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
