Internationally acclaimed biological artists Oron Catts, Ionat Zurr, and Jestin George join co-hosts Elizabeth Stephens and Grayson Cooke for a discussion on the art and science of synthetic biology. This talk is part of an international series of public talks that pair artists and scientists for an evening of discussion on subjects of shared concern. Each of the speakers will present an abstract, followed by a reception. Registrations are essential for catering purposes.

Dr Jestin George is an interdisciplinary researcher working across synthetic biology, biodesign, and design futuring. She is a co-founder and editor of SYNTHESIS, Australia’s first synbio-meets-design magazine and currently works as a designer-in-residence for the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology.
Dr Ionat Zurr is an artist and academic. She holds a cross position as the Head of the Fine Arts Discipline at the School of Design and SymbioticA, the School of Human Sciences, at the University of Western Australia. Ionat exhibited and published in the area of Biological Arts and beyond in places such as GoMA Brisbane and MoMA NYC.
Oron Catts is co-Founder and Director of SymbioticA: The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Human Sciences at the University of Western Australia. Catts has curated thirteen exhibitions, published/co-edited four books, published more than eighty book chapters and journal articles. His work featured in exhibitions in venues such MoMA NY, Centre Pompidou, Mori art Museum, Science Gallery London and Dublin, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Ars Electronica, National Art Museum of China, and more.
