Felting with Norton Fredericks

Workshop

22 March 2025
2-4pm

Join Norton Fredericks for this workshop. Participants will be guided to mindfully create humanity’s oldest fabric, wool felt. Felting is an ancient craft that combines soapy water and wool to create a sustainable biodegradable material. Create bespoke surface designs with natural fibres of hemp and flax, and stitch a personal symbol. Bring an old towel and an art journal or diary for symbol making. Suitable for all skill levels. Not suitable for anyone who has wool or soap allergies. Bookings essential.

Guest Info
  • Born 1990 in Tulmur/Ipswich, Norton Fredericks is an artist and workshop facilitator of mixed European and Aboriginal (Murri) heritage. They live on Kombumerri Country, Gold Coast. They work at the intersection of art and science, examining the external forces that impact on the human experience and the environment around us, exploring themes of ecological threat, environmental contamination, trauma, and their intersectional identity. They create using fibres, textiles, metals, pottery, and photography, while drawing on their knowledge of chemistry, environmental sustainability, and ancient crafts.

The Institute of Modern Art acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land upon which the IMA now stands, the Jagera, Yuggera, Yugarapul, and Turrbal people. We offer our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the first artists of this country. In the spirit of allyship, the IMA will continue to work with First Nations people to celebrate, support, and present their immense past, present, and future contribution to artistic practice and cultural expression.
