New IMA Publications
9 March 2018
This March, the IMA is proud to launch two new publications, The Artist As and Tom Nicholson: Lines towards Another.
The Artist As
“How do artists work today? What kinds of roles do they occupy, have these roles changed over the years, and how does this impact the ecology of art?” These are some of the questions that contributors Brook Andrew, Walter Benjamin, Heman Chong, Ekaterina Degot, Hal Foster, Helen Hughes, Helen Johnson, Isabel Lewis, Adam Linder, Suhail Malik, Tara McDowell, Emily Pethick, Terry Smith, Cecilia Vicuña, and Tirdad Zolghadr, seeks to address in this reader.
The Artist As is edited by Aileen Burns, Johan Lundh, and Tara McDowell, and published by Sternberg Press, Curatorial Practice at MADA, and the IMA. It has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. The Artist As will be launched at Artspace, Sydney in conjunction with the 21st Biennale of Sydney, 14 March, and at the National Gallery of Victoria during the Melbourne Art Book Fair, 17 March.
Tom Nicholson: Lines towards Another
Drawings and correspondence surveys the central role drawing plays in Tom Nicholson’s engagement with contemporary political realities in Australia and beyond. The show will be accompanied by the first monograph of Nicholson’s work, Lines towards Another, edited by Amelia Barikin and Helen Hughes, and co-published by the IMA, the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, and Sternberg Press. Tony Birch, Bridget Crone, Jacqueline Doughty, Anthony Gardner, Anneke Jaspers, Ryan Johnston, John Mateer, Shelley McSpedden, Mihnea Mircan, Grace Samboh, Ann Stephen, and the editors themselves give compelling insight into Nicholson’s diverse material approach, political practice, and historical context.
Tom Nicholson: Lines towards Another launches at the IMA at the opening of Drawings and correspondence on 24 March 2018. Lines towards Another is supported by the Gordon Darling Foundation and Myer Foundation.
