“Hello. I’m Brett Wood. I’m a photographer from Brisbane, Australia who specialises in capturing the everyday, often unnoticed aspects of the life of this city. For this project, I have created a fine art photography book that captures my hometown under the cloak of darkness, in… A Different Light.
This project is particularly special as it was birthed during an unprecedented time in our history. COVID has taught us many things and one thing it taught me is the way that boredom can be the catalyst for creative endeavours. After being housebound during lockdown I was itching to get out and take photos however, the rules and regulations prevented us from venturing too far from home. So, I made a plan to leave the house with a camera, film and tripod after dark. When I developed my first roll I was hooked on the colours that the film rendered by absorbing light over an extended period of time. It revealed colours that the naked eye could not perceive. Now, I needed to do this regularly.
Over the last 3 years, I have spent countless hours alone in the dark capturing the captivating and beguiling beauty of the suburban and industrial landscapes of Brisbane, particularly during the nocturnal hours. I wanted to record the areas of Brisbane that aren’t frequented by many in the night hours. Brisbane has a reputation as a city of closing down at 9 pm each night. The images in this book do nothing to dispel this stereotype, capturing the unique atmosphere of the city at night and its diverse architecture, which often goes unnoticed. The work serves as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of our cities during these unprecedented times, and of the beauty that can still be found in the darkness.
This project has been a labour of love. I have lived in Brisbane almost my entire life and despite its flaws, I love this place.
The book and the photographs within represent a moment in time. Many of the spaces and places have already changed; Brisbane is a city experiencing incredible growth so more change is inevitable. As the years progress this volume will act as a reminder of the city that was. For many, it will be a city they have never seen. ”
