Post-Plantation Heir II

2024

silver gelatin print, 25 x 20cm, unframed
IMA Edition of 20

Post-Plantation Heir II (2024) is a photographic print by Australian South Sea Islander artist Jasmine Togo-BrisbyAn edition of twenty, this is a rare opportunity to own a limited-edition print by the renowned artist.

In this self portrait, the artist wears a model of a tall ship as a headpiece. It is a nod to the vessels that ‘blackbirded’ her ancestors from Vanuatu to Australia in the late-nineteenth century to work on plantations and in domestic servitude.

Togo-Brisby speaks of how photography was used by colonial governments as a means of control: “Australian institutions almost always own our images. [Our family members] are commonly unknown subjects in photographs taken by unknown photographers, and therefore deemed property of the state.”

Utilising early photographic technology (wet-plate collodion photographs on tin, or tin types) to make her own record of her family history, her portraits of herself, her mother, and her daughter claim her maternal line as a source of strength.

IMA Editions are a series of limited edition artworks exclusively for sale in our onsite and online store.
