EDITOR’S NOTE

Throughout this issue of Artist Profile we feature exhibitions demonstrating the rich diversity of Australasian artists locally and abroad. It’s exciting for us to be able to critique their many groundbreaking moments.

Salvatore Zofrea, this issue’s cover artist, has three exhibitions. Two are surveys, curated from his sixty years of making art. The Drawn Line is a collaboration between Manly Art Gallery & Museum and Orange Regional Gallery, which focuses on the artist’s works on paper. Luminosity, at Macquarie University Art Gallery is attentive to changes in Zofrea’s paintings, drawings and prints. We celebrate Midday Light, Zofrea’s monumental “nature and light” exhibition at Australian Galleries, Sydney, with a double-sided poster featuring his 2021 Midday Light and 2013 Morning Light.

Other exhibitions include untitled (transcriptions of country) by Jonathan Jones at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in collaboration with Artspace and Information + Cultural Exchange. The Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany, exhibits Toba Khedoori’s works over the last twenty years. These are excellent examples of bold Australian visions.

D Harding appears in five group exhibitions, including the Palais de Tokyo’s Reclaim the Earth with artists from Canada, Brazil, Vietnam, Chile, Pakistan, and Australasia such as Kate Newby, Judy Watson, and Megan Cope. Harding is in the current Sovereign sisters: domestic work exhibition at Flinders University Museum of Art, Adelaide, and will also appear in rīvus, the 23rd Biennale of Sydney. Harding has been invited to the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki, for the tenth edition of ARS, ARS22: Living Encounters.

For the first time in Australia, we’ll see a significant show of Helmut Newton’s photography. During World War II, Newton was interned in regional Victoria as an “enemy alien” and worked as a photographer in Melbourne before returning to Europe.Appropriately, the show is at the Jewish Museum of Australia, Melbourne.

At UNSW Galleries in Sydney is the massive multi-medium exhibition Elizabeth Pulie: #117 (Survey). April at the Redcliffe Art Gallery in Queensland sees a long overdue survey – thirty plus years of Mick Richards’s photography. I’m excited to have co-curated this show with Warraba Weatherall, and to have curated the survey of over eighty rarely seen paintings drawings, prints and collages, Steve Lopes Encountered, to be presented by Sydney’s S.H. Ervin Gallery and Orange Regional Gallery in their respective spaces throughout 2022.

Orange Regional Gallery’s new extension heralded a number of new and refurbished regional art museums opening across Australia in 2022. Ngununggula in Bowral, opened with the lifting of Covid restrictions, SAM in Shepparton, Victoria, Rockhampton, Queensland, and Bundanon in New South Wales are all on the cards to open before the year’s end. With Federal Cultural, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism Funding and State infrastructure spending, regional Australia is embracing the arts: I’ll be judging the re-imagined Art Prize at the Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival in June.

We also take a deep look into Sebastian Goldspink’s Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Free/State, at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Sally Ross’s new show at Martin Browne Contemporary, the huge Queer: Stories from the NGV Collection, in Melbourne, Gareth Sansom’s upcoming exhibition at Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery, Sydney, The 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art and Chiharu Shiota: The Soul Trembles, both at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, The Supers: Craig Tuffin at the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre, Primavera 2021: Young Australian Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Australia, Lee Bethel at The Egg & Dart in Thirroul, Jenn Nkiru: REBIRTH IS NECESSARY at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane, MindScapes and These Stories Will Be Different at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Frances Barrett, Shammgods, George Tillianakis, Kym Barrett and many more.
